Program Notes
I composed Three Pieces for Piano Quintet during the pandemic, after spending a year writing music exclusively for film. I became so enamored with the process of writing music to accompany a story, that I had to invent my own imaginary films to inspire these pieces. I don't think my hypothetical films would win any Oscars, and so they will be kept a secret, but I encourage listeners to imagine their own stories when hearing these pieces. They are intended to be performed either as a suite, or as single standalone pieces.
The title of the first piece, Between Breaths, refers to the practice in meditation of focusing on the moment when the breath changes direction. The piece begins with the ensemble taking a few musical breaths together. The second piece, Snow Rider, feels like spending an evening inside of a snow globe. The third piece, Dive, has a zig-zagging descending theme, and is the most jazz-influenced of the three pieces.
