Sparks was commissioned by violinist Julia Mirzoev for her album Sapphire Blues, which explores the intersection of classical and jazz music. The piece features continuous rhythmic drive and funk-influenced syncopation throughout. A recurring motif introduced at the opening underpins much of the work, with melodic material that adds a subtle blues colour.
