Shadows on the Ice is inspired by the language of contemporary jazz. Its form mirrors the traditional jazz structure of "head, solos, head," in which the "head" is the main melody and the solos are improvised. Here, however, the improvised solos are replaced by written material: the viola begins by developing the theme alone before the other instruments gradually join the dialogue.
