Program Notes

     Lost Souvenir began as the second movement of Pender Harbour Paradise, composed in 2019. I later reworked it into this standalone version for piano quintet.  Although romantic in character, the work was composed during a period when I was immersing myself in early music, and elements of that style found their way into this piece. A 25-bar theme cycles repeatedly throughout, oscillating between dark and bright modes. Rather than presenting sharply contrasting variations like a theme and variations, each return preserves the same contemplative character while gradually building in intensity.
