Afternoon Confusion was written for Spectrum Music's "Legend and Lore" concert, featuring the Heavyweights Brass Band. Inspired by the awe and uncertainty that a solar eclipse must have inspired in ancient times, the piece imagines the bewilderment of watching the world suddenly plunge into darkness in the middle of the day. Most of the work unfolds in an sunny and energetic jazz-funk style, complete with improvised solos, before an abrupt and unsettling shift transforms the music into something much darker, echoing the eerie spectacle of the eclipse itself.
